Our mission of delivering our over 90,000 customers with a high-quality, reliable, and resilient water supply is very important to us. While we understand the desire to use property owned by the Board for recreational purposes, most forms of trespassing are dangerous may pose serious threats to both the vital operations of the Board and the quality of the drinking water supply. 

As the safety of the public is paramount, these rules are non-negotiable. We thank you for understanding our position on public use of our property. 

Wenham Lake

Wenham Lake is the terminal location of our water prior to treatment, where finished water is pumped to over 90,000 residents. Thus, the security of the reservoir is of upmost importance. Trespassing, fishing, boating, kayaking, swimming, bathing, wading, discharging of waste, picnicking, driving unauthorized vehicles, and building or lighting fires is not permitted on or around Wenham Lake. Violators will be prosecuted with a fine of $500, and of not more than one year of imprisonment.

Putnamville Reservoir

Fishing is allowed in the Putnamville Reservoir, however, it requires a special license from the Salem and Beverly Water Supply Board. Details on how to acquire a fishing permit may be found here.

Walking and fishing are allowed only in the allotted zones. Please see the attached map. Movement through any other part of the property is considered trespassing.

Other forms of trespassing, such as boating, kayaking, swimming, bathing, wading, discharging of waste, picnicking, driving unauthorized vehicles, and building or lighting fires are not permitted on or around the Putnamville Reservoir. Violators will be prosecuted with a fine of $500, and of not more than one year of imprisonment.

Longham Reservoir

As posted, Longham Reservoir is not to be trespassed by any person for any reason at any time. 

Fishing, boating, kayaking, swimming, bathing, wading, discharging of waste, picnicking, driving unauthorized vehicles, and building or lighting fires is not permitted on or around the Longham  Reservoir. Violators will be prosecuted with a fine of $500, and of not more than one year of imprisonment.

Ipswich River Canal

Contrary to misinformation spread online, the Salem-Beverly Waterway Canal is NOT a public hiking trail; it is a protected water supply that is not to be trespassed on for any reason at any time.

Fishing, boating, kayaking, swimming, bathing, wading, discharging of waste, picnicking, driving unauthorized vehicles, and building or lighting fires is not permitted on or around the Canal. Violators will be prosecuted with a fine of $500, and of not more than one year of imprisonment.
