Why is Wenham Lake So Full/Empty?

Every Year the Water Board fills Wenham Lake from its other sources, (Ipswich River Canal and the Putnamville and Longham Reservoirs), to its overflow elevation by the end of May. The Board pumps and treats the water from Wenham Lake at its filtration plant throughout the summer months. At the end of the summer, when the lake has a low surface elevation, the Board can then perform its vegetation maintenance around the shoreline of the lake and clean its backwash water lagoon at the plant. This necessary maintenance work can only take place when the lake has a low water surface elevation. Once this work is completed, which is typically in September each year, the Board then refills Wenham Lake from its other sources, mostly from the Putnamville Reservoir. Once the lake is full, which is typically by the beginning of December each year, the Board then refills the Putnamville Reservoir from the Ipswich River Canal until it is full, which is typically by May each year. This cycle repeats every year, and the use of supply sources varies depending on the available water resources.

You can read more about our reservoir interconnections on our “Our Water” page.

Can I Swim or Fish in the Lake?

Due to the threat to the drinking water supply, boating, swimming or allowing pets into Wenham Lake, Putnamville Reservoir, or Longham Reservoir is not permitted in any circumstance.

Putnamville Reservoir is the only body of water controlled by the Board that is able to be fished, with a proper license. Please see our fishing permit acquisition page to learn how you can get your permit. Fishing is not allowed in any other reservoirs owned by the Board.

Why is My Tap Water Discolored?

There may be a number of contributing factors to your tap water appearing discolored including but not limited to:

City or Town Construction, Water Main Breaks, and Hydrant Flushing or Usage. If your water is still discolored, flush your cold tap water for up to 15 minutes, from your outside spigot or the lowest point in your house or business until the water runs clear. Under most circumstances, please refrain from using hot water until the cold water runs clear. If you have a filter in your house, make sure to regularly clean and replace it.
