The Salem and Beverly Water Supply Board is aware of the current taste, odor and color concerns some residents have been experiencing and is currently working with both municipalities to address these concerns.
The Board is currently transferring water from Putnamville Reservoir in Danvers to Wenham Lake in Beverly. This process may be drawing more minerals into the system resulting in color, odor and taste issues. The Board is utilizing treatment measures to counteract these issues, and the newly treated water should be making its way through the distribution system and out to our customers. Additionally, certain parts of the cities may be experiencing isolated impacts related to water breaks or construction outside of these slightly elevated levels.
As with similar issues in July, water tests do not indicate any issues with bacteria and disinfection levels are consistent with past testing. The color, taste and odor issues appear to be strictly aesthetic. Water going out to customers is otherwise safe to use, for the general population. Parents with infants less than 12 months of age and individuals with specific health concerns should consult their physician.
With manganese, very small amounts (less than 0.10 per million) can cause significant color, however, remains harmless.
As with color issues in the water usually caused by hydrant flushing, customers can try flushing cold water from the lowest point in their home, or from an outdoor spigot, for several minutes. This may immediately resolve the color.
Additionally, a Brita, or similar pitcher with an activated carbon filter, can be used in the interim to help reduce any unpleasant taste.
If customers have any issues with color in their laundry, we recommend using “Red B Gone” which can help remove color and odor from laundry without interacting with trace minerals.
We greatly appreciate the patience of Beverly and Salem residents as the newly treated water continues to make its way through the distribution systems and into your homes and businesses.
Thank you.
